Abstract

One of the optimal goals expected in Master’s prepared nurses is the capability of turning research results into practice and, in turn, to continually conduct further research. However, these goals and activities remain low. The purpose of this study was to survey 1) the status and barriers of conducting research, 2) needs for assistance to conduct research, and 3) barriers to research utilization among Master’s prepared nurses who have graduated from Prince of Songkla University School of Nursing. The Modified Barriers to Research Utilization Questionnaire was mailed to 280 nurses who graduated from Prince of Songkla School of Nursing. The response rate was 56.8%. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Approximately 77% of the responders have had experiences of conducting research since their graduation. Eighty-three percent of the sample reported incorporating research findings into practice. One barrier of conducting research reported by 78% was having no time to conduct research study. Approximately 60% of the sample reported that they seek help in terms of accessing to research resources and research grants to conduct research studies. The barriers to research utilization were the following characteristics: communication, organization, research quality, and adopter respectively. These findings indicate that barriers to research conduct and utilization of this sample were related to having no time and limited accessibility of research findings. This could lead to limited use of research results turned into practice. Therefore, facilitations of time and research findings in the workplace are necessary and this requires several strategies.
